Instagram recover account guide: start from the screen you see
Six different lockouts hide behind one search. This guide sorts them by the words Instagram shows you, then walks each official route, its deadline and what to do when the email and password are both gone.
To recover an Instagram account, start from the exact message on your screen. A forgotten password goes through Forgotten password? and a login link. A hacked account goes through Secure my account. A suspension or disability goes through the appeal on that screen. A deleted account comes back only inside its cancellation window, usually 30 days.
What does instagram recover account mean for the screen in front of you?
People type instagram recover account into a search bar when five or six different things have gone wrong. The fix depends on which one it is, and Instagram tells you, usually in one line on the login screen or in an email. Read that line before you press anything. The table below matches the most common wording to the route that answers it.
| What you see | What it means | Route | Clock |
|---|---|---|---|
| Incorrect password, or a code you never asked for | Password forgotten or changed | Forgotten password? then a login link | None published |
| Email from security@mail.instagram.com about a change you didn't make | Someone else is in the account | Secure my account link, or the hacked flow | Act the same day |
| We suspended your account | A policy decision under review | Appeal button on that screen | Date printed on your screen |
| Your account has been disabled | Access removed, review may be offered | Request a review, then Account Status | Shown only if a review is open |
| No account found, or the profile is gone | Deleted by you or by someone with your password | Log in to cancel the deletion | Usually 30 days, varies by region |
| The profile is hidden but logs in fine | You deactivated it | Log back in | No expiry stated |
When we re-read Instagram's own Help Centre pages between 30 September and 3 October 2026, we saw one pattern across all of them: the platform prints a reply time for almost nothing. It gives the 30-day deletion window and says a verification selfie is deleted within 30 days. Every other wait is left open. So the clock column above is mostly "trust your own screen", and that is the honest answer.
How to recover my Instagram account when the password stopped working?
Use the login screen's Forgotten password? link, as Instagram's can't-log-in help page describes. It accepts your username, the email address or the phone number on file, and any one of the three is enough to start. Instagram then offers to send a login link to the email or phone it already holds. Open the link on the same device if you can, set a new password, and check the account's email and phone straight after, because a changed address is the first sign that this was not a simple memory slip.
That covers the plain version of how to recover instagram account access. Three habits make it go faster. Try the app and the website both, since a saved login on one sometimes survives on the other. Check the spam folder before asking for a second link; each new request cancels the last. And if the screen asks for a captcha, finish it yourself rather than through any tool that offers to "speed up" the reset.
- Tap Forgotten password? on the login screen. Enter the username, email or phone you used to sign up.
- Choose where the login link goes. Pick the email or number you still control.
- Open the link and set a new password. Use one you have never used on another site.
- Check Accounts Centre. Confirm the email, the phone and two-factor settings are yours.
How do I recover my Instagram account without email and password?
You need some other proof that the account is yours, and Instagram accepts only a short list. A phone number on file still works for the login link. A linked Facebook account in the same Accounts Centre can sign you in. If you have photos of yourself on the profile, Instagram may ask for a video selfie that turns your head to different angles; it says that video is used only for verification and deleted within 30 days. If there are no photos of you, it asks for the email or phone you signed up with and the device type you used at sign-up.
That is how to recover instagram account without email and password in practice. It is not a separate form; it is the same hacked or can't-log-in flow, reached by tapping that you no longer have access to the email. For an instagram account without email and password and without a linked Facebook profile, Instagram's lost email or phone page is blunt: it says it is "unable to give you access to the account". It also says it cannot help with the email account itself, so a lost Gmail or Outlook address has to be recovered with that provider first.
Two-factor users have one more fallback. Backup codes, set up earlier in Accounts Centre, replace the code from a lost phone. You can only view or refresh them while logged in, which is why a screenshot of them stored somewhere safe is worth five minutes today.
Can I recover my Instagram account through Facebook?
Yes, if the two accounts were connected before you lost access. Instagram lets you log in with Facebook when both profiles sit in the same Accounts Centre and the setting that lets them log in to each other is switched on. On the login screen that shows up as a Continue with Facebook option, or as a saved account the app already remembers.
It does not work the other way round. Linking Facebook after the lockout is impossible, because linking needs a logged-in Instagram session. It also does not help if the person who took the account removed the link. That happens in takeovers often enough to plan for.
When the link is gone, go back to the hacked route and the selfie check described above. If your Facebook profile is the one that is locked, our look at what Facebook account recovery services can and can't do covers that side. One small point catches people out: a saved account on Android can come from a Google account on the phone, not from Facebook, so the option you see may not be the one you expect.
What happens when your Instagram account is suspended?
An instagram account suspended notice means Instagram thinks the account broke its Terms or Community Guidelines and has stopped it while a decision is made. Instagram says it tells owners by email and on the screen when they try to log in, and that the same screen says whether an appeal is possible. Use that screen; the older standalone appeal forms now send you back to the Help Centre home page.
How to recover an Instagram account suspended for 180 days
The 180-day figure comes from Meta's Facebook Help page on suspended accounts, which says you can appeal "within 180 days" and that the account is disabled for good if you don't, or if the appeal fails. Instagram's own page prints no number. So read the date on your own screen, then appeal early rather than late: a calm, specific appeal that names the post or behaviour in question and explains it reads better than a generic "I did nothing wrong". Keep a copy of what you send.
How to recover a disabled Instagram account that violated Community Guidelines
Tap Request a review if the disabled screen offers it, then follow progress under Settings, Account, Account Status, which lists removed content and lets you ask for a review item by item. Reviews do succeed. In Instagram's EU transparency report for the first half of 2026, 7,816,585 complaints were filed against account suspensions and 2,838,533 of them, about 36%, ended with the decision reversed. EU users who lose the internal review can also take the case to a certified out-of-court body.
Can you recover a permanently deleted Instagram account after 30 days?
No. Instagram's account deletion page says that after 30 days "you won't be able to retrieve your information", and its disabled-accounts page adds that a deleted account has "no way to restore it". Within the window, a deletion request is cancelled simply by logging back in. The number of days can differ by region, so if you are close to the deadline, try the login now rather than reading more.
So the realistic way to recover a deleted instagram account is to act inside that window, and the way to recover deleted instagram account content after it is to look for copies: a data download you made earlier, posts saved on your phone, or messages other people still hold. You can sign up again with the same email. The old username may come back only "as long as it hasn't been taken", and another Instagram page warns you may not get it at all. Check whether a deletion was really yours, too. Instagram notes an account can be deleted "by you or someone with your password", and that version is a hacked-account case first.
Not sure whether the profile is deleted at all, or only disabled or blocking you? Our guide to telling a deleted Instagram account from a disabled or blocked one walks through the signs. Anyone offering to recover a deleted instagram account long after the deadline is selling something Instagram itself says does not exist.
How long does it take to recover an Instagram account?
For a password reset, minutes. For everything else, Instagram does not promise a time, and the honest way to answer how long does it take to recover an instagram account is to list the clocks that are published and say plainly where the rest are missing.
- Login link
- Arrives within minutes; a new request cancels the old one.
- Video selfie
- No account access while under review; the video is deleted within 30 days.
- Deletion window
- Usually 30 days to cancel by logging in, varying by region.
- Suspension appeal
- Meta's Facebook page cites 180 days; your screen shows your own date.
- EU complaints
- Median handling time of 60.2 hours in Instagram's H1 2026 report.
- Meta Verified chat
- Closes itself after 7 days without a reply from you.
Hacked-account reviews have no published time at all. Meta said in December 2025 that its hacked-account recovery success rate had risen by more than 30% in the US and Canada after it changed the flow, but it did not give a duration. Plan for days.
Keep the reset emails rather than starting over each morning. Each fresh request restarts the queue you were already in.
What's the Instagram support email to recover account access?
There isn't a public one. Instagram does not run a general support inbox that unlocks accounts, and Meta's policy page on support numbers says it has no general public phone number for customer service either, warning that numbers claiming to be Meta support are potentially scams. The only email addresses involved are the ones Instagram writes from, such as security@mail.instagram.com, and you reply to those through the links inside them, not by writing a letter.
To check that a message is real, open Accounts Centre and look under recent emails, which lists what Instagram sent in the last 14 days. Paid Meta Verified subscribers get chat and email support for the verified profile, starting at $14.99 a month for the Standard plan, but it has to be opened from the logged-in app, so it helps with problems inside an account more than with getting into one. Any address you find on a forum that promises "Instagram account recovery" by email is someone else's inbox.
When does an instagram account recovery service make sense?
An instagram account recovery service cannot open a door Meta keeps shut. It has no inside line, no special form and no way past the 30-day deletion limit, and any seller who claims one is either mistaken or lying. What a careful recovery instagram account service can do is the slow part: work out which of the routes above fits, write an appeal that names the actual policy, prepare the evidence a hacked-account review asks for, and keep the case moving when the first answer is no.
That is also the test to use on any provider, including us. Ask which route they would use and why. Ask what they need from you; the right answer never includes your password, a login code or your backup codes, because instagram to recover account access only ever asks you, the owner, to enter those. Ask what happens if Meta says no. A provider who guarantees a result, quotes a fixed number of hours, or wants a new login on your account is selling risk, whatever the listing says.
Before you pay anyone Meta's own Terms say it will not reinstate accounts disabled for breaking the law or its policies, and forbid collecting other people's login details. A seller who asks for your credentials puts the account at more risk than the lockout did.

What else do people ask about this?
Is there a phone number for Instagram account recovery?
No general one. Meta says it has no public customer service phone number and that numbers claiming to be Meta support are potentially scams. Only some Meta Verified plans can request a call, from inside the logged-in app.
Can I get my account back if the hacker changed the email and phone?
Often, yes. Look for the email from security@mail.instagram.com about the change and use its Secure my account link. If that is gone, use the hacked flow on a phone and complete the video selfie or the sign-up details check.
Is a deactivated account the same as a deleted one?
No. A deactivated account is only hidden and comes back when you log in again, with no expiry stated. A deleted account has a cancellation window, usually 30 days, and is gone after it.
Will I get my old username back after deletion?
Only if nobody has taken it in the meantime. Instagram lets you sign up again with the same email, but it warns the username may not be available, so a rare handle is often lost for good.
Does a recovery service need my password?
No. Every official route sends the reset link, code or selfie request to you, the owner. Anyone asking for your password, login codes or backup codes is asking for the account, not offering to recover it.
How do I know a recovery email really came from Instagram?
Open Accounts Centre and check recent emails, which lists messages Instagram sent in the last 14 days. If the email is not listed there, treat it as phishing and don't click its links.
