How to reactivate X account access: find your day on the 30-day clock, then log in
A deactivated X profile is not gone yet. It sits in a 30-day holding state, and the way back is shorter than most people expect. What decides the outcome is the day you are on and whether you can still pass the login. This page sorts out both before you press anything.
To reactivate an X account, log in at x.com/login or in the X app within 30 days of deactivating, then confirm the reactivation notice. There is no form or settings button. After 30 days with no login, X deletes the account and it cannot be restored. Forgot the password? Reset it first, then log in.
How to reactivate X account access: is a login really all it takes?
Yes. X's reactivation help page describes no request, no form and no waiting list. You sign in on x.com or in the iOS or Android app with the username, email or phone and the password, X shows a notice asking whether you want to reactivate, and you confirm. You land on your Home timeline and the profile is public again. We re-read that page on 18 October 2026.
That answers most versions of the question. How to reactivate twitter, how to reactivate x and how to reactivate an x account are the same flow, because twitter.com forwards to x.com and the rebrand changed nothing about deactivation. People who type twitter reactivate account or reactivate account twitter are usually hunting for a button in settings, and a search for x reactivate account tends to end in the same place. There isn't one. The login is the switch, and it works from any browser or phone, not only the device you deactivated on.
The rest of this page is about the cases where that single login is not so simple: the clock is nearly out, the password or inbox is gone, the account keeps waking up by itself, or the screen shows something other than a reactivation notice.
Which day of the 30 are you on?
X counts the window from the moment you confirmed deactivation. Its deactivation page says that once 30 days pass without a login, the account is deleted and is no longer available in its systems. X does not publish the hour the window closes, so treat the last day as already gone. Find your row before you do anything else.
| Where you are | What X still holds | Do this now |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 to 25, you know the password | Posts, followers, DMs, username, email | Log in and confirm the notice. Done. |
| Day 1 to 25, password forgotten | Everything above | Reset the password today, then log in |
| Day 26 to 30 | Everything, for a few more days | Log in now. Do not wait on support replies. |
| Day 31 or later | Nothing. The account is deleted. | Open a new account; check if the old handle is free |
| Login shows a lock or suspension | Not a deactivation at all | Follow the notice; reactivation does not apply |
Can you reactivate a twitter account on day 40? No, and no support agent can extend the window. Some older guides mention a longer period for certain accounts; X's current page names 30 days only, so that is the number to plan around.
What should you have ready before you reactivate your Twitter account?
Most failed attempts to reactivate your twitter account fail at the login, not at the reactivation step. Spend two minutes checking these before you start, especially if you are past day 20.
- The password
- If you are not sure of it, reset first. Guessing can trigger a temporary login limit.
- The inbox on the account
- Reset codes go there. Make sure you can still open that mailbox.
- The phone number
- An SMS reset or SMS login code needs the number to still be yours.
- Two-factor method
- Authenticator app, security key or a saved backup code, if 2FA was on.
- Connected apps
- Note any scheduler or cross-poster; it can log in for you later.
- Store subscription
- App Store or Google Play billing may have kept running while you were away.
Two-factor is the item people forget. Deactivation does not switch it off, so if you lost the phone with the authenticator app, find your backup code before you try. X explains backup codes on its two-factor authentication page.
How to reactivate my Twitter account on the app or the website
How to reactivate my twitter account is the same on every device, and so is how to reactivate your twitter account for someone you are helping: the person who owns the login has to do it. To reactivate twitter account access on a phone, a tablet or a desktop, follow one order. The order below is the one we walk people through, with the checks that save a second attempt.
- Open x.com/login or the X app. Use a browser if the app is out of date; the website always shows the current flow.
- Enter the username, email or phone. If several accounts share one phone number, use the email or username instead.
- Enter the password and any 2FA code. A backup code works in place of the app code.
- Confirm the reactivation notice. X asks whether you want to reactivate. Choose yes and you are on your Home timeline.
- Check Apps and sessions. Remove anything you don't recognise before you close the tab.
If you want to reactivate x from a phone you no longer own, any phone or computer will do. The account is not tied to the device, only to the login details. Reactivate my twitter on a work laptop if that is what you have; just sign out afterwards.
Can you reactivate your Twitter account if you can't log in?
Only by getting the login back first. How to recover deactivated twitter account access comes down to the password reset, because X has no separate recovery path for deactivated accounts. Its password reset page sets out the route: choose "Forgot password?", enter the email, phone or username, and X sends a code that is valid for 60 minutes. Setting a new password logs you out of every session. Then sign in and confirm the notice.
How to get back deactivated twitter account access without the email or the phone is the hard case. X's answer is to create a new account. Before you accept that, recover the mailbox through your email provider; it is often quicker than people think, and the X reset only checks that you can read the code. If the email on the account was changed by someone else, that is a compromise, and it belongs with the hacked-account steps below.
The same logic applies on other platforms you may be juggling at once. If an Instagram login is stuck too, our guide to matching the Instagram recovery route to the screen you see works the same way: pick the route from the message, not from a guess.
Why does my deactivated X account come back on its own?
Because any login reactivates it, including one you didn't type. X's deactivation FAQ says a connected third-party app may sign in on your behalf, and that logging in reactivates the account. A deactivated x account that keeps returning almost always has a scheduling tool, a cross-posting app or an old "sign in with X" login still holding access.
The fix sits under Settings, Security and account access, Apps and sessions. X's third-party apps page explains how to review and revoke them. Revoke every one, log out of other sessions, then deactivate again. A single "just checking" login during the window has the same effect, so if you want to stay away, stay logged out.
"Twitter deactivated my account": or did something else happen?
When someone writes twitter deactivated my account, X usually did not. On X's help pages deactivation is a choice the holder makes from settings with the password. X's own actions are locks and suspensions, and each shows a different notice at login. So a twitter account deactivated without your input points to one of three things:
- Someone else had your password. A twitter deactivated account you never closed means the login was shared or stolen. Reset the password, log in inside the 30 days, then revoke apps and sessions and turn on 2FA.
- A lock read as a deactivation. A locked account asks you to verify a phone, pass a challenge or change the password. That is not a deactivated twitter state; follow the prompt.
- A suspension. The notice says the account is suspended. Reactivation does not apply; the route is an appeal through X's own form.
Hacked accounts often come in pairs. If a Facebook profile linked to the same email went too, our page on what paid Facebook recovery help can and cannot honestly do sets out Meta's own routes first.
What should you check after Twitter account reactivation?
The login is instant, but X says posts, followers and likes may take a while to fully restore, and it gives no figure. Expect low counts for a time. Use the first hour after twitter account reactivation to check the things that do not fix themselves.
- Your counts. Low numbers right after an x account reactivation are normal. Give them a day before you worry.
- Direct messages. They are kept for the whole window and only deleted with the account.
- Username and email. Both stay tied to the account for the 30 days, so a deactivated twitter account keeps its handle until day 31.
- Subscriptions. X says in-app subscriptions stay active during deactivation, while ones bought on x.com cancel. Check your store billing.
- Copies of you. Search your name and photos. A deactivated profile is hidden, and impersonators like that gap.
One thing twitter reactivation will not do is repair the account. X's page says deactivating and reactivating does not resolve missing posts, wrong follower counts or a possible compromise. If you deactivated to fix one of those, it will still be there.
A missing account on another app is a different puzzle. If an Instagram profile vanished around the same time, our page on telling a deleted Instagram account from a disabled or blocked one helps you name which it is.
Can I reactivate my Twitter account again after deactivating twice?
Yes. Can i reactivate my twitter account after a second deactivation is a common worry, but each login simply ends the current deactivation. X describes the 30 days as starting from the deactivation, so we would expect a fresh count each time, though X does not spell that out. What you should not do is cycle on and off to fix a problem; as above, it fixes nothing.
If what you really wanted was a break, there are lighter options than a deactivated x account: protect your posts, mute notifications, change the username from Account information, or just log out of every device. None of them start a deletion clock. Instagram runs its own version of this pause with different rules, set out in our timeline for bringing back a deactivated Instagram account.
Where do you get help if the login keeps failing?
X does not run phone support for reactivation, and its help forms are built for locks, suspensions and hacked accounts rather than "please turn my profile back on". If you are on day 26 or later and the reset code never arrives, put your energy into the inbox and the phone, not into a support ticket that will not be read in time.
For reference, the way Meta handles the same problem is different, and comparing them helps when you manage several accounts. Our notes on which Instagram support doors actually reach a person and on the Instagram support email addresses that are real show how far Meta's channels go. And if an email claiming to be from a platform tells you to "reactivate" through a link, treat it like the fakes in our guide to reading account security emails safely: real reactivation never starts from an email.

What else do people ask about this?
Can you reactivate a Twitter account after 30 days?
No. After 30 days without a login X deletes the account, and its help page says a deleted account cannot be reactivated. You would need to open a new account.
How long does X account reactivation take?
The login itself is instant. X says posts, followers and likes may take a while to fully restore and gives no number of hours, so expect low counts at first.
Can I reactivate my Twitter account without my email?
Yes, if you still know the password or a phone number on the account can receive the reset code. With no password, email or phone, X's advice is to create a new account.
Does reactivating bring back my username?
Yes, within the 30 days. X keeps the username and email tied to a deactivated account for that window. From day 31 both are free for anyone to register.
Why did my deactivated account reactivate without me?
A connected third-party app or a saved session logged in, and any login reactivates the account. Revoke apps under Apps and sessions, then deactivate again.
Can a suspended X account be reactivated?
No. A suspension is not a deactivation. The login shows a suspension notice instead of the reactivation prompt, and the way back is an appeal through X's form.
