How to get back a Instagram account, starting from what you still hold
Most guides sort lost accounts by what went wrong. That helps less than it sounds, because the thing that decides whether you get back in is what you still control: an inbox, a phone number, a face on the profile, an old phone that is still logged in. This page starts there and then works through each way an account goes missing.
To get back a Instagram account, start from the login screen and use whatever you still control: a password reset to your email or phone, the hacked-account flow at instagram.com/hacked, or a review request if Instagram disabled it. A deactivated account returns on login. A deletion past its cancellation window cannot be undone.
How to get back a Instagram account: which situation are you in?
Getting an Instagram account back is really seven different jobs that happen to share one login screen. You switched it off yourself. You asked Instagram to delete it. Someone else took it. Instagram locked it after odd activity. Instagram disabled or suspended it. It was reported and then removed. Or it is simply old, and the email and number on it are long gone. Each of those has its own door, and knocking on the wrong one costs days.
Try one login, from the app or from instagram.com, and note the exact words on the screen. If you see a notice about a disabled account, a request for a security code, a password error or a message that the username does not exist, that wording already narrows it down. For a fuller read of each message, our guide to matching the Instagram recovery route to the screen you see goes line by line. Here we take the other angle: what you hold, and what each thing you hold can unlock.
What do you still hold, and which doors does it open?
Instagram's recovery tools all check one of a few things you might still have. Work out which of these you have before trying anything, because the strongest one you hold decides your fastest route.
| What you still hold | What it unlocks | Where it stops working |
|---|---|---|
| The email inbox on the account | Password reset links, and the "revert this change" link if a hacker swapped the email | When the attacker also changed the email and the revert link has expired |
| The phone number on the account | SMS reset codes and login codes | When the number was changed, ported or recycled by your carrier |
| Your face in the profile photos | Video selfie identity check through Need more help? | On accounts with no clear photos of you, such as brand or meme pages |
| An old phone still logged in | Settings access to change the password and email from inside | When the hacker logs out other sessions or the app is reinstalled |
| Only the username | The login-help flow, which asks you to prove ownership another way | When no email, phone or photo can confirm you |
| A disabled-account notice | A review request from inside that notice | Once the review deadline shown in the notice passes |
If you hold two of these, use the one listed higher first. An inbox you control beats everything else, because Instagram sends both reset links and change alerts there. Recover an old inbox through its own provider before you touch Instagram at all.
How to get a hacked Instagram account back
Open the email account linked to Instagram and search for messages from security@mail.instagram.com. When someone changes the email on an account, Instagram mails the old address with a link to reverse the change and secure the account. Using that link quickly is the cleanest way to get a hacked Instagram account back, because it rolls the email back before the attacker can lock you out further. Our decoder for checking whether a security@mail.instagram.com message is genuine helps you avoid the look-alike emails that arrive in the same week.
No email, or the link no longer works? Go to instagram.com/hacked, or tap Forgot password? and then Need more help? on the login screen. Instagram will offer whichever check suits the account: a code to an email or number you enter, or a video selfie that it compares with the photos on the profile. Instagram says the selfie is used only for that check and is deleted afterwards.
How to get your Instagram account back from a hacker who changed everything
When the hacker has changed the email, the phone number and the password, how to get your Instagram account back from a hacker comes down to the selfie check or a code sent to a new email you supply. Do it from a device and network you have used with the account before; Instagram trusts familiar devices more. Once you are in, change the password, remove unknown devices from Login activity, turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app and check Accounts Centre for linked accounts you did not add.
Do not pay anyone who messages you offering to "hack it back". People who lost an account are the main target of recovery scams, and the person asking for a fee, your codes or remote access is often linked to the original takeover.
How to get back a deleted Instagram account in 2026
How to get back a deleted Instagram account depends on who deleted it and when. If you, or someone using your login, pressed Delete, the account sits in a hidden waiting period first. Log in during that period and Instagram offers to keep it. Instagram's help page says the account and its information are permanently deleted 30 days after the request, and also says the time you have to cancel varies by region, so treat any day you wait as a risk.
The question of how to get a deleted Instagram account back in 2026 has the same answer it had before: the cancellation window is the only way back, and support cannot reopen it for you. Our explainer on telling a deleted Instagram account apart from a disabled or blocked one covers the cases where "deleted" turns out to be something else, such as an account that only blocked you.
How to get back a permanently deleted Instagram account
Once the window has closed, there is no route. Instagram says that a deleted account cannot be restored, and that full removal from its systems can take up to 90 days; those 90 days are for its servers, not a second chance for you. So the honest answer to how to get back a permanently deleted Instagram account is that you cannot. You can sign up again, and try for the old username if it has not been taken, but followers, posts and messages do not come back. Anyone who claims otherwise for a fee is selling something that does not exist.
How to get back into a deactivated Instagram account
This is the easy case. If you deactivated the account yourself, logging in with your username, email or phone and password brings it back, posts and followers included. The usual snag is timing: many people report that a login in the first day after deactivating fails with "Try again later". If you are trying to get back into a deactivated Instagram account the same day you switched it off, wait until tomorrow and try once.
If you have forgotten the password as well, the reset link doubles as the reactivation. Our timeline for reactivating an Instagram account at each point on the clock lays out what a login does on day one, after a week and with a deletion pending.
How to get back into a locked Instagram account
A lock is Instagram asking you to prove it is you after something looked unusual: a login from a new country, many wrong passwords or a burst of activity. The screen usually asks for a code by email or text, or for a video selfie. Getting back into a locked Instagram account means finishing that check, not starting a new recovery. Ask for one code, wait for it, and enter it; every new request cancels the last one. If the screen shows only a vague error instead of a check, our guide to clearing the Instagram "Something went wrong" login error separates app glitches from real blocks.
If the lock came after many failed attempts, stop for a few hours. Repeated tries tend to extend a temporary block rather than lift it. The same pattern appears on other apps; TikTok's version is explained in our note on why TikTok says maximum number of attempts reached and how long it lasts, and the advice to wait rather than retry carries over.
How to get a suspended Instagram account back
A suspended or disabled account is Instagram's decision, so the way back is a review, not a login. Log in, and the notice on screen tells you why the account was suspended and offers a way to disagree with the decision. The notice also shows how long you have to ask for a review; Instagram's Help Centre does not publish a fixed number of days for every case, so read the deadline on your own screen and act well before it. Meta's page on disabling accounts says some accounts are disabled on the first serious violation, while others reach it after repeated strikes.
Write the review request as facts: what the account is for, that you did not break the rule named, and what you have already secured if a hacker posted from it. One clear request is better than several; repeat submissions do not move you up a queue.
How to get back a reported Instagram account
A report on its own does not remove an account. Instagram's reviewers or systems check reported content against its Community Guidelines, and Meta says the number of reports does not decide the outcome. If an account was taken down after a wave of reports, it was removed for a violation Instagram believes it found, and the way to get back a reported Instagram account is the same review request as for any disabled account. Point out if the reports were coordinated or if the removed posts did not break the rule cited. If the person behind the reports also copied your profile, report the copy separately once you are back in.
How to get a old Instagram account back when the email is gone
Old accounts are lost to forgetfulness more than to hackers. To get an old Instagram account back, try every email and phone number you used in the years the account was active; any of them can work as the login identifier. Search your old inboxes for "Instagram" to find which one received the welcome message. If the account is linked in Accounts Centre with a Facebook profile you can still open, that link can help you log in.
If none of the old contact details work, the login-help flow and a video selfie are the remaining options, and they work only when the profile shows clear photos of you. Instagram does not publish a rule that deletes accounts for inactivity, so an old account usually still exists; the difficulty is proving it is yours. The X equivalent works differently, with a firm 30-day window, as our guide to reactivating an X account before its 30 days run out explains.
How to help a friend get their Instagram account back
You can help a friend, but you cannot recover the account for them. Instagram's checks are tied to the owner's email, number and face, so the work has to be done by your friend on their own phone. What you can do is useful, though:
- Confirm it is really them. Call or meet in person. If "your friend" messages you from the account asking for help, assume the hacker is writing.
- Never send them a code. A common trick is a hijacked account asking friends to forward a login code "sent by mistake". That code unlocks your account, not theirs.
- Report the hacked account. Instagram's hacked-account pages let you flag a friend's account that looks taken over, which can trigger checks on it.
- Warn mutual followers. A short story or post saying the account is compromised stops others paying fake "investments" or giveaways.
- Send them the right link. Point them to instagram.com/hacked and to the email from security@mail.instagram.com, and lend them a phone they have used before if theirs is lost.
That is the whole of how to help a friend get their Instagram account back: keep yourself safe, keep their followers warned, and steer them to the owner-only steps.
Where does real Instagram help come from when the routes above fail?
Instagram has no phone line for account recovery, and replies to its no-reply emails go nowhere. The routes that do reach a review are inside the app and the Help Centre. Our map of the Instagram customer service routes that lead to a person shows which ones respond, and the list of genuine Instagram support email addresses and what each one handles saves you writing to inboxes no one reads. X has the same gap, with no number to call, and our page on why there is no Twitter helpline and what to send instead shows how to word a written request so it gets read.
If the same Accounts Centre holds a Facebook profile that is also locked, that side has its own rules and its own scams. Our look at what Facebook account recovery services can and cannot legitimately do covers the offers worth ignoring.
No one can get an account back from the outside Instagram restores accounts only through checks the owner completes. Anyone asking for your password, a login code, backup codes or an upfront fee to "unlock" an account is running a scam.

What else do people ask about this?
Can Instagram support restore my account if I call them?
No. Instagram has no phone line for account recovery. Restores happen only through the in-app and Help Centre checks that the owner completes.
How long does it take to get a hacked Instagram account back?
Using the revert link from security@mail.instagram.com can take minutes. A video selfie check usually takes longer, and Instagram does not publish a fixed time for it.
Can I get my Instagram account back without email or phone?
Sometimes. The Need more help? option can offer a video selfie check, which works only if the profile shows clear photos of you.
Will a new account get my old username back?
Only if the old handle has been released and nobody has claimed it. A deactivated account keeps its username, so it cannot be reused while that account exists.
Do reports alone get an Instagram account removed?
No. Reported content is checked against Instagram's rules, and Meta says the number of reports does not decide the result. A removal means a violation was found.
Is it safe to pay someone to get my Instagram account back?
Be very careful. Nobody outside Instagram can restore an account. Never share your password, codes or backup codes, and refuse any upfront unlock fee.
