Forgot my Instagram password: reset it from what you still have

Everyone forgets a password eventually. On Instagram the reset itself takes two minutes; what slows people down is picking a route that sends the code somewhere they can no longer open. This guide starts from what you still have and points you to the reset that will actually reach you.

If you forgot your Instagram password, tap Forgot password? on the login screen, enter your username, email or phone number, and choose where the code or link should go. Open the newest message only, set a new password you have not used before, and log out other sessions. No email or phone left? Use the account recovery route instead.

Forgot my Instagram password: what should I do first?

Stop and check one thing before you tap anything: are you still logged in somewhere? A phone you rarely use, a tablet, a work browser. If Instagram is still open on any device, you don't need the login screen at all. You can set a new password from inside the app, and the whole problem is over in a minute.

If you are logged out everywhere, the next question is which contact details on the account you can still open today. Instagram can send a password reset to the email address or the phone number saved on the profile, and nowhere else. That is the whole decision. People who say "I forgot my Instagram password and the reset doesn't work" have usually asked Instagram to send a code to an inbox or a number they lost years ago. Whether you typed "forgot my IG password", "forgot my insta password" or "Instagram forgot my password", the fix below is the same.

So before the steps, write down three things: the username, every email address you might have used, and every phone number you have had since you opened the account. If you only remember the account by its display name, our guide to working out what you still hold when an Instagram account slips away helps you narrow it down.

Which Instagram password reset route matches what you still have?

Each row below is a different password reset Instagram offers. An IG password reset works the same way on every route; only the destination changes. Start at the first row that is true for you.

What you still have, which Instagram reset route to use, what arrives, and what to do if it fails
What you still haveReset routeWhat arrivesIf it fails
Instagram still open on any deviceAccounts Center, Password and security, Change passwordNothing; you set it there, or tap Forgot password? on that screenUse the login-screen route from that same device
The email address on the accountLogin screen, Forgot password?, enter the emailAn email with a login link and a codeCheck spam and promotions, then request once more and wait
The phone number on the accountLogin screen, Forgot password?, enter the numberA text message with a code or linkRestart the phone, check that texts from short codes are not blocked
Only the usernameForgot password?, enter the username, pick a masked contactA code to whichever contact you pickIf neither masked contact is yours, go to recovery
A linked Facebook loginLog in with Facebook, then change the password insideNothing; Facebook signs you inRecover the Facebook account first
None of the aboveAccount recovery, not a password resetAn identity check, often a video selfieFollow the recovery screen; a reset cannot help here

The last row is the important split. A password reset needs a working contact. When there isn't one, you are in account recovery, and our walkthrough on choosing the right Instagram recovery path from the message you see takes over from there.

How to reset Instagram password from the login screen

This is how to reset your Instagram password when you are logged out, and the short answer to how to reset password Instagram questions in general. The wording differs slightly between the iPhone app, the Android app and instagram.com, but the order is the same.

  1. Open the login screen. In the app, tap Forgot password? under the password field. On the web, the Instagram reset password link sits under the Log in button.
  2. Enter what you remember. Type your username, email address or phone number. If you type the username, Instagram shows the saved contacts with most characters hidden, so you can see which one it will use.
  3. Choose the destination. Pick email or text. Choose the one you can open right now, not the one you used most often.
  4. Open the newest message. Requesting again cancels the older links. Use only the latest code or link, and open it on the same phone if you can.
  5. Set the new password. At least six characters, a mix of letters, numbers and symbols, and not one you use anywhere else.
  6. Review your sessions. Instagram offers to log out other devices. Say yes unless you are sure every session is yours.

That covers how to reset a password on Instagram for most people. If you were asking "how do I reset Instagram password on the web only?", the same steps work in any browser. A password reset on Instagram from a desktop browser sometimes asks for an extra check, such as a code sent to your phone, because the device is new to the account.

How to reset Instagram password while you're still logged in

Some people search "cant remember password for Instagram" while the app is still open on their phone. In that case you still don't have to log out. Go to your profile, open the menu, then Accounts Center, Password and security, and Change password. Instagram asks for the current password, and if you don't know it, a Forgot password? link on that screen sends a code to your saved email or number.

Instagram how to reset password questions often come from people who would rather not risk being logged out mid-process. Doing it from a device that is already signed in is the safest way, because Instagram already trusts that device. While you are there, check that the email and phone number shown in Accounts Center are still yours, and add the missing one. That one minute decides whether next year's "forgot my password Instagram" moment is easy or painful.

Why the Instagram password reset email or code never arrives

A quick IG pw reset usually lands within a minute. When an Instagram pw reset or a reset insta password request goes quiet, it is almost always one of these:

  • Wrong inbox. The account was opened with an old school or work address, or a typo nobody noticed.
  • Filtered mail. Spam, promotions or a mail rule moved the message. Search your mail for "Instagram".
  • Too many requests. Asking five times in a row can trigger a short wait. Request once, then give it fifteen minutes.
  • Blocked texts. Some carriers and phone settings block messages from short codes.
  • Expired link. Reset links stop working after a while and after a newer request. Ask for a fresh one and use it right away.
  • Changed contacts. If someone else changed the email or number, the code goes to them, not you.

If Instagram shows an error instead of sending anything, our decoder for what Instagram's "something went wrong" screens are really telling you covers the common ones. And if the reset screen says you have tried too often, wait it out rather than trying again; the lock behaves much like the one in our page on clearing TikTok's too-many-attempts lock, only on Instagram.

Got an Instagram password reset you didn't ask for?

Ignore it. A password reset for Instagram that you never requested does not change anything until someone clicks it, and Instagram's own advice is to leave it alone and check your security settings in the app instead.

This happened at scale earlier this year. Around 10 January 2026, many users received reset emails they had not requested, sent from Instagram's real address. Instagram later said there was no breach: an external party had been able to trigger reset requests without getting into accounts, and the issue was fixed. As Keeper Security's write-up notes, the real risk came afterwards, from look-alike messages pretending to be Instagram support.

A genuine message comes from an address ending in @mail.instagram.com, and you can confirm it inside the app under Accounts Center, Password and security, Recent emails, which lists what Instagram sent in the last 14 days. Our note on whether a security email really came from the platform walks through that check. Also watch your direct messages: Instagram never sends password links by DM. Report those fake "Instagram support" accounts as spam rather than replying; a breakdown of how Instagram sorts automated spam reports from genuine ones explains why one accurate report from you counts for more than a flood of copied ones.

Forgot Instagram password and lost the email and phone too?

A forgotten password for Instagram is a small problem; a forgotten password Instagram has nowhere to send a code for is a bigger one. This is where most forgotten Instagram password cases turn into recovery cases, and recovering Instagram password access means using the Instagram recover password option labelled as account recovery or "Can't reset your password?". Without a working contact, the reset route has nowhere to send a code. Instagram instead offers an identity check: for accounts with photos of you, that is usually a short video selfie; for others, questions about the email used to sign up and the device you used.

The path depends on what Instagram shows you. If the account was taken over, the steps differ from a plain forgotten password, and our guide to proving an Instagram account is yours to unlock it lists the proof each screen asks for. If the profile seems to have vanished, first rule out a deleted Instagram account, as opposed to a disabled or hidden one. If you paused it yourself, reactivating a paused Instagram profile starts with the same login screen, and if Instagram turned it off, read how to work out who deactivated an Instagram account and how to undo it.

Can Instagram support reset your password for you?

No. Nobody at Instagram resets a password by hand on request, and there is no live phone line for it. Instagram password retrieval is self-service by design, so the code goes only to the contacts saved on the account. Our page on the Instagram support routes that actually reach a reviewer lists what Meta does answer, and our guide to contacting Instagram support by the problem you actually have sorts the routes by situation. If a "support agent" opens a chat offering to reset it for you, our check on which Instagram support chats are real shows why that chat is not Instagram.

That matters because forgotten passwords attract scams. Check which Instagram support addresses are genuine before writing to one, and read what each Instagram phone line really connects to before you call anything you found in a search result. If someone offers to recover Instagram password access for a fee and asks for your login codes, walk away; our guide to what an honest recovery service can and cannot promise explains the warning signs.

Does a password reset work the same on X and TikTok?

Broadly, yes: a reset code goes to the saved email or number, and support cannot override it. The differences show up when the reset leads to something worse. On X, a reset sometimes lands you on a suspension notice, which our guide to reading an X suspension notice before you appeal explains, or on a deactivated profile you can bring back with the steps for reactivating an X profile inside 30 days. X has no phone support either, as our page on why X has no helpline and which written channel replaces it covers. If you get back in but your posts seem hidden, our hand test for a limited X account sorts out whether anything is wrong. On TikTok, a reset that ends in a ban notice belongs to appealing a TikTok ban and the odds of getting it lifted.

What to do right after you reset your Instagram password

Once a reset IG password or reset Instagram password request has worked, spend three more minutes so it never comes back:

  1. Save the password. Put it in a password manager, not a note on the phone.
  2. Check contacts. In Accounts Center, confirm the email and phone are current and both are added.
  3. Turn on two-factor authentication. An authenticator app is stronger than text messages.
  4. Save backup codes. Keep them offline. They get you in when the phone is lost.
  5. Review where you're logged in. Remove devices and connected apps you don't recognise.

How does Social Concierge help when a reset fails?

We don't work at Instagram and can't push a reset through. What we do is look at what you still hold, tell you whether you're in a password reset or a recovery case, and prepare the route that fits, from the right contact to the evidence a video selfie check expects. You stay logged in and in control throughout. We never ask for passwords, login codes or backup codes, and if the normal reset will work, we tell you so and charge nothing.

Which sources does this guide rely on?

  1. Instagram Help Center: Login and password
  2. Instagram Help Center: Check recent emails from Instagram
  3. Meta Accounts Center: Password and security
  4. Keeper Security: Why did I receive an Instagram password reset email? (23 January 2026)

What else do people ask about this?

How long does an Instagram password reset link last?

Instagram doesn't publish an exact time. Links stop working after a short while and as soon as you request a newer one, so always use the latest message straight away.

Can I reset my Instagram password without email or phone?

Not with a normal reset. Without a working contact, Instagram moves you to account recovery, which usually asks for a video selfie or details about how you signed up.

Will resetting my password log me out of other devices?

Instagram offers to log out other sessions after a reset. Accept it unless you are sure every logged-in device is yours.

Why does Instagram say my new password is too weak or already used?

Instagram rejects short, common or recently used passwords. Use at least six characters with letters, numbers and symbols, and pick one you have never used on the account.

Is an Instagram password reset email I didn't request dangerous?

Not by itself. Nothing changes unless you click it. Ignore it, check Recent emails in Accounts Center, and turn on two-factor authentication.

Can I reset an Instagram password using my Facebook account?

If the accounts are linked, you can log in with Facebook and then set a new password from Accounts Center without a reset code.
